Give
Our Regards to the Atom Smashers!
An entertaining collection of essays about... get this... the
experience of reading comics. I'm not talking about nuts and
bolts, panel-to-panel, but the actual experience. From having
a crush on Terra in the 80's to the somber statement on the
state of America in the Alex Ross book U.S. |
| From
the publisher: "Here is Jonathan Lethem on childhood
friendships, comic books, and the genius of artist Jack Kirby
. . . Brad Meltzer on spending a summer vacation with the New
Teen Titans. . . Glen David Gold on the obsessive nature of
collecting . . . Myla Goldberg writing about the disturbed visions
of Chris Ware and Renée French . . . Steve Erickson riffing
on the perverse patriotism of American Flagg. Here, too, are
Luc Sante on Tintin, Aimee Bender on Yummy Fur, Greil Marcus
on Uncle Sam, Lydia Millet on Little Nemo in Slumberland, and
many others. Give Our Regards to the Atomsmashers! is a quirky,
thrilling, and compulsively readable celebration of the unique
alchemy of words and drawings that forms the language of comic
books. It is a book that will delight the seasoned comics reader
and invite everyone else into a whole new world." |

By
far my favorite TV series, I plan to review an episode from it every month.

The
Sixth Finger

|
"Your ignorance annoys me."
The king of stern-voiced actors alongside Patrick McGoohan, David
McCallum stars as Gwyllm, a disgruntled miner in a small Welsh
village. Having lost his job for declaring himself 'too good for
the work,' he ends up unemployed and still very very angry, so
much so that he talks of destroying the town to the one sweet
thang in the story who offers him a suggestion toward a new vocation...
lab rat. She introduces Gwyllm to Professor Mather who hangs out
with the super evolved chimp he made and eats hand delivered bread.
THAT, my friends, is the life. What follows is a trip through
the psychological and molecular evolution of Gwyllm as his head
gets big, he learns how to read minds, play the piano, speed read,
do without hair and grows that erstwhile sixth finger.
|
I
kid the story, but it is fantastic. A tale about not just where
the human race as an organism is going, but where society can lead
as well. Gwyllm grows into a monster bent on killing his attackers
before they find him only to evolve past that kind of nonsense before
he murders a pair of motorbike cops with his mind.
Ofcourse, as in anything, he is undone by his main squeeze who just
wanted him to have a decent job, not evolve into pure thought, merging
into the core of action and being... women,
I tells ye. |

sequential artist
Jack
Cole
 |
Perhaps
the most important mad comic artist (after or before Lou Fine? I
have no idea), Jack Cole is the father of that walking innuendo,
Plastic Man. Cole was one of the first cartooniststo utilize
the line as a tool to exaggerate emotion and move the reader's eye
from panel to panel. Comicbook scholars like Art Spiegelman loves
this guy and for good reason. Jack was the real thing.
Moving fluidly from superheroes, crimesmashers and criminals, Jack
was also the master of the erotic cartoon, creating many Playboy
comics as their first star artist. Jack's linework defined the look
of not just the magazine, but alongside artists such as Chas Addams,
the era in general. |

music
Animal
Collective-Feels
 |
Rarely
is an album as moving and expertly arranged as this. From the opening
tracks unsettling tones to the frantic drums and chanting of the
single 'Grass,' Feels is a work of art that is not easily listened
to track by track. With a childish energy and musical inventiveness,
Animal Collective have created a new kind of musial experience.

vietnamese
noodle soup

I
know what you're thinking... 'This is fancy stuff, it ain't
for me' or 'I can't cook that!' or even 'why would
I follow a recipe on a sci-fi comic website?'
Well,
I dunno... but it's easy and if you like spicy food it 's good.
If not... have a glass of water ready!

What
you'll need:
Chicken
(skinless, cut into strips. You can even get a whole cooked
chicken if you like and just cut up the meat. If you're vegan,
why not stir-fried tofu?)
Thin rice noodles (you can find them in the International
aisle)
Chicken broth (Pacific Foods is good, stay away from
salty watery Coollege Inn)
Peanuts (unsalted)
Scallions (thinly sliced)
Mint leaves(fresh, you can find this in your produce
aisle)
Cilantro leaves (fresh, same story as the mint)
Lime (one should be good)
Chili garlic sauce (again, the International aisle is
your friend)
Beansprouts (optional. Personally, I don't like them)
- Simmer
broth in a pot with shredded cooked chicken on medium heat for
10 minutes.
- While
that's simmering, soak rice noodles in hot water for 10 minutes.
Drain.
- Add
noodles to broth. Let that simmer for another 2-3 minutes.
- While
all that simmering is going on, you're going to be eating the
peanuts you bought and cutting up the green leafy things and
placing them in nice small serving bowls, or on a square plate
like in the pic above. Smash the peanuts you haven't eaten into
crumbly bits to drop into the soup.
- Serve
the soup into bowls.
- Add
the ingredients to taste (personally I like to make my soup
a nice red color with pepper sauce, but don't feel pressured).
Invite
a friend over and eat!
Email
me about the results!
