TORTURED
is my first comic - I like to think the genesis of the comic
makes an interesting story, but you can decide that for yourself.
I was
looking through some listings in the AbsoluteWrite.com
newsletter and saw a contest looking for short cliche vampire
stories. I did a little research and settled on an old Scottish
legend about the Baobhan Sith.
The story
didn't place in the contest, but I really liked the story
and decided to rework it as a comic. (This wasn't the first
time I'd tried something like this - originally I'd seen it
as something similar to the X-Files in 1995, in a 4-issue
series. Unfortunately the web hadn't penetrated popular culture
at the time, so I couldn't find an artist and wound up shelving
the project. I tried various incarnations as film scripts,
but none of those worked, either.)
When I
started out, I was planning on going 8 pages - but cut that
back to its current length while I was converting from short
story to comic. I cold-queried Kurt Belcher
with the idea, he liked it, and the rest as we say, is history...Kurt
also had connections with Peter (Simeti - letterer)
and Levi (Skeen - inker)...I'm really happy with the
result and honored I got to work with such a talented team
on my first time out.
I think
the story works because puberty can be downright scary. The
changes going on not only with our bodies, but our minds can
be terrifying...and once you have kids (I've got two), it
moves to a completely different level. It's a scary time,
and like it or not, we all go through it.
